Bunch of Fives: Must know streets...

Finding your way around Abu Dhabi's main island streets is a piece of cake, provided you know all the names of the main streets - and not just one time - they all have a name, a nickname and a number.

1. Airport Road, 2nd Street: Bisecting the city from Maqta Bridge all the way to the Corniche, this major artery links up to Sheikh Zayed road on the mainland over Maqta Bridge, or you can keep going straight to Al Ain.

2. Electra, Zayed the First and Second, 7th Street: Crossing the T-section of Airport Road, only veterans of the city would call this busy street Electra. Often the most direct route across the city, Electra begins at Le Meridien Hotel and cust straight through Khalidiya all the way to the InterContinental hotel.

3. Old Airport Road, Muroor Road, 4th Street: Back in the olden days, Muroor Road was the high street of Abu Dhabi. Home to the main post office, Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre and the Al Muhairy centre (the Chilis'building), Muroor serves as an alternative to Airport Road.

4. Khaleej Al Arabi, 3oth Street: The main byway linking residents of the Khalifa Cities and Mussafah to the city, 30th is one of the easiest routes from the mainland to the Corniche. The timed traffic lights help keep traffic under control and will take you from the public beach through Khalidiya and all the way out to the airport.

5. Eastern Ring Road, East Road, Salam Street, 8th Street: One of the most confusing streets in the capital, this construction weary street will soon be a major route for those living on Reem island. For now, it's the only way to get to Park Rotana and twofour54.

Travel Destination: Tagaytay City, Philippines...

Legend has it that the word “Tagaytay” came from “TAGA” meaning “to cut” and “ITAY” which means “Father”. A father and son were said to be on a wild boar hunt when the animal they were chasing turned and attacked them. As the boar charged towards the old man, the son cried “TAGA- ITAY”. The boy’s repeated shouts reverberated in the valleys of the ridge. Heard by the residents, hunters and wood gatherers, the cries became the subject of conversation for several days among the people in the countryside. In time, the place where the shouts came from became known as TAGAYTAY.

During the Philippine Revolution of 1896, the ridges and forests of Tagaytay became the sanctuary for revolutionaries including of those from nearby provinces. The passage to and from towns via Tagaytay added the word “Mananagaytay” to the native’s vocabulary. It means “to traverse ridges”.

At the outbreak of the Second World War, the 11th Airborne Division of Lieutenant General William Krueger’s 8th Army airdropped military supplies and personnel on the Tagaytay Ridge prior to the Liberation of Manila from the Japanese. A marker was installed in 1951 at the junction of the Manila-Canlubang-Nasugbu roads by the city officials in coordination with the Philippine Historical Institute.

Tagaytay became a chartered City on June 21, 1938 when President Manuel L. Quezon signed Commonwealth Act No. 338, a bill authored by Representative Justiniano S. Montano of Cavite.

AREA AND TOPOGRAPHY

The city has a total land area of 65.00 square kilometers or 6,500 hectares. Tagaytay City is characterized by mixed topography. The southern and eastern portions are covered by hills and mountains which are generally forests and open grasslands. There are ridge areas with slopes ranging from 10.1 to over 25 percent. On the other hand, the portions adjoining the municipalities of Mendez, Indang, Amadeo and Silang are level to nearby level areas interspersed with very gently sloping surface. The built-up areas including the urban center are situated in these relatively level portions of the city..

CLIMATE

Tagaytay City’s climate is characterized by relatively low temperature, low humidity and abundant rainfall. The city is endowed with a cool and invigorating climate with an average temperature of 22.7 degrees Celsius. The city is misty and is relatively cooler during the months of December, January and February. Like most areas in the Province of Cavite, the city has two pronounced seasons: dry from November to April and wet during the rest of the year.

Travel Info: General Santos City, Philippines...

General Santos City, or simply GenSan, has gained prominence, not just in Region XII but in the entire country for being on the cutting edge in terms of economic stability, growth and tourism potential. Through the efforts of its citizens, the city has gained a reputation as being business and tourist friendly.
Geography

General Santos is located in South Cotabato. Beside it are the three municipalities of Sarangani and two municipalities of South Cotabato. GenSan is situated off the southeast of Cebu and Manila, and just a little southwest of Davao. The total land area is 180 sq. miles, or 490 sq. km. It has an elevation of 50 ft.(15m) and has a population of a little over half a million.

Natural Resources

The geographical location of the city, like Davao, makes it an ideal place for planting and sowing crops. With 30% of the land ripe for agriculture, General Santos has become very competitive in the production of prime commodities. Among its numerous products are rice, corn asparagus, okra, and an assortment of export quality
fruits and vegetables.

Economic Infrastructure

A sound infrastructure is needed for any city to attract investors, and General Santos excels in this department. Basic necessities, like power and water are provided for by the Napocor (National Power Corporation) and the GSC Water District, respectively.
The transport sector has also been well established. The General Santos International Airport is the most modern in Mindanao. With a runway over 9,000 feet long, it is more than capable of handling the largest passenger airlines.

The Makar Wharf, on the other hand, is regarded as the finest in the region, if not the country. With a 2,400 ft. docking length, and about 63 ft. wide, it has become the primary shipping port, and is always busy with ships transporting goods and cargo.
Through the Pan-Philippine Highway, General Santos is no considered as a gateway city to all parts of Mindanao, and also linking it with the other cities in the country.

These elements have combined to make one of the most economically vibrant cities. All the institutions that one would expect in a first class city that one expects, like banks, universities, government offices, etc. can be found throughout the city.

History

Very little is known of the history of the Cotabato region before the pre-Hispanic era, except that it was mostly populated by Muslims. When the Spanish arrived, they encountered heavy resistance from the Muslims, as was often the case in Mindanao. The situation repeated itself when the Americans came.

After the region was liberated by the Allied Forces in 1945, the entire region began experiencing growth, with several companies setting up businesses This trend continued well into the late 1950s and 60s. and by July 1968, through Republic Act No. 5412 General Santos was declared a city. Today, the city is classified into 26 barangays.

The people are known for being hospitable and friendly. The dominant religions are Christianity and Islam, although the influx of foreigners and peoples from other lands have seen the emergence of other beliefs as well.

Entertainment

General Santos has become a big draw for tourists for several reasons. Those who like to experience the best of modern life can get it with shopping malls, movie houses, restaurants and a wide range of hotels and inns.

Those who want to get a glimpse of the culture and history should look no further than its various festivals, which tell the story of the city and province through colorful parades and dances. There are also several landmarks such as the tunnels, waterfalls and camping grounds.

Vacation adventure...

Traveling around the world is one of the most interesting thing I know. It enables you to explore the beauty of the world as well as the culture, customs, practices, traditions and people of the said place you been. Plus it gives you a chance to experience their lifestyle as well as learn their entire history as to how they build their community or nation at large.

Even I myself was dreaming to travel the world aside from the fact that I wanted to relax and unwind myself together with loved-ones. One specific thing why I opted to travel or try an all inclusive vacation packages is basically to live their lifestyle and eventually explore the beauty of their foods, and other delicacies. Specifically, I wanted to visit those popular restaurants in specific cities where I wish to explore. Reason behind that is I love food! I love to cook as well as explore the other cultures food. I actually tasted food of Thailanders, Japanese, Chinese, Americans, Italians, Arabic and Indians and of course Filipino foods as its pretty obvious that its my common food. I know, I only have few tasted foods list yet! But soon enough I wish to taste those foods I have not tasted yet.

In fact, I was planning to take my company vacation in one of the beautiful place of Breezes Resorts and plan to stay for a couple of days. Besides, its a company expense and all I need to bring is just some of my clothes and few more cash. Feel excited about it. But probably I can only took my vacation by next month I guess as I need to fixed all the things at work first.

One of the place I wonder and plan to visit is the Runaway Bay Jamaica where it offers a great holiday vacation adventure while relaxing and enjoying all the luxuries I can have. Hopefully I'll get the chance to explore the place.

Aside from this, I also consider the amazing place of Negril Jamaica where it happens to be one of the nicest place in the said country. So, what more else I can say? Wish me luck everyone! Hopefully, you guys will gonna have a vacation too. Enjoy!

Lesson about family vacation..

What's the purpose behind a family vacation? Is it only about gathering, playing, smiling, swimming and some other usual things we do during vacation. Is it only about that? or There's something more important why we garther for a reason? Well, basically we tend to have a vacation for some definite and individual reason.

In my own point of view, family vacation is indeed important basically because we need to renew the vows of love and care for our family. We need to secure and full them of love as much as possible. Its the only way we can assure them that no matter what happens the strong bonds you tightly imposed will not be broken.

Remember, we just humans after all. We can never be perfect but can be perfected. So, as much as possible we need to get away from any temptations that might possibly harm the relationship we had for our partner, silings and family at large.

Si therefore conclude that family vacation is indeed crucial for each of us to learn how to value our family not for any reason but because blood by blood you are counted as one. So, if you guys wants to have a great vacation better grab the chance now to visit the great and amazing place of Cancun, Mexico. This place is totally amazing!

Travel Tips if traveling alone...

Each year, more and more women travel abroad alone. Whether they are on a business trip or a vacation, women traveling alone are more likely than men to encounter problems in certain cultures. While few Filipinos would agree with these views or the double standard for women, it is obviously in your best interest to become familiar with the laws and customs of countries you plan to visit and to abide by them once you arrive.

solo travel

Tips for Solo Travel

Following a few simple tips can help make your trip safe and rewarding.

1. Passports and Visas: Make sure your passport is still valid or, if not, apply for a new one 3-4 months before you plan to travel. Make sure you have any other necessary travel documents or visas for the countries you plan to visit.

2. What to Leave Behind: Leave your detailed itinerary and photocopies of your passport’s identification page and your flight and ticket information at home with a friend or relative. Include names, addresses and telephone numbers of every place you will be staying.

3. Don’t Carry Valuables: Leave all valuables, such as extra credit cards and jewelry, at home. Even costume jewelry poses an unnecessary risk to your safety, because thieves aren’t likely to know it’s not the real thing until after they steal it.

4. Health Insurance: Make sure you have adequate health insurance coverage for your trip abroad and that your coverage includes medical evacuations. If your policy does not cover you overseas, you may need to purchase supplemental traveler’s insurance.

5. Medications: If you take prescription drugs, make sure you have enough to last the length of your trip, including enough extra medication to keep you supplied in case of delays, and bring along your prescription information and the names of the generic equivalents in case you need them. Always carry your prescriptions in their labeled containers, because many countries have strict laws against drug trafficking and may be suspicious of pills in unlabeled bottles.

6. Safety and Security: Stay alert, use common sense, and be aware of your surroundings. If you think you’re being followed, step into a store or another safe place and wait to see whether the person passes by. Don’t be embarrassed to ask someone to make sure everything is safe before you venture out again. If you’re still unsure, call your hotel for assistance.

7. Be Confident: Looking, acting and moving as though you know where you’re going and what you’re doing will prevent you from looking like an easy target and may help you avoid potential danger.

8. Ask for Directions: Before you set out from your hotel, ask the concierge or other hotel staff for directions to the places you plan to visit each day. This will help you avoid unsafe areas and also prevent you from looking confused and potentially vulnerable. If you get lost, ask directions from a family or a woman with children.

9. Hotel Safety: Choose a hotel where security is good and public transportation or taxis are readily available and close by. Once in your room, check to make sure that all of the doors and windows have working locks. If you feel uncomfortable, ask hotel security to escort you to and from parking lots or your room at night. Always use your peephole before opening your door.

10. Clothing: It’s always best to dress conservatively and inconspicuously when traveling. Whenever possible, take your fashion cues from local women. In some cultures, what you consider attractive casual clothing may be seen as provocative or inappropriate, even offensive, which could spark harassment. In addition, your style of dress, or the amount of makeup and jewelry you wear, could make you a more likely target for thieves.

Travel Info: Philippine Wonders Mayon Volcano

Mayon is an active stratovolcano. The current cone was formed through pyroclastic and lava flows from past eruptions. Mayon is the most active of the active volcanos in the Philippines, having erupted over 49 times in the past 400 years.

Mt.Mayon

It is located on the eastern side of Luzon, beside the Philippine Trench which is the convergent boundary where the Philippine Sea Plate is driven under the Philippine Mobile Belt. Where a continental plate or belt of continental fragments meets an oceanic plate, the lighter continental material overrides the oceanic plate, forcing it down into the earth’s mantle. Magma, formed where the rock melts, may be forced through weaknesses in the continental crust caused by the collision of the tectonic plates. One such exit point is Mayon.

Like other volcanoes located around the rim of the Pacific Ocean, Mayon is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Mayon has had forty-nine eruptions in recorded history. The first recorded eruption was in 1616, the last major eruption ceased on 1 October 2006, although a devastating lahar followed on 30 November 2006. A further summit eruption occurred on 10 August 2008. Mayon Volcano on September 23, 1984

The most destructive eruption of Mayon occurred on February 1, 1814. Lava flowed but not as much compared to the 1766 eruption. Instead, the volcano was belching dark ash and eventually bombarding the town with tephra that buried the town of Cagsawa—only the bell tower of the town’s church remained above the new surface. Trees were burned; rivers were certainly damaged. Proximate areas were also devastated by the eruption with ash accumulating to 9 m (30 ft) in depth. 2,200 Albay locals perished in what is considered to be the most lethal eruption in Mayon’s history.

Mayon Volcano’s longest uninterrupted eruption occurred on June 23, 1897 which lasted for seven days of raining fire. Lava once again flowed down to civilization. Seven miles eastward, the village of Bacacay was buried 15 m (49 ft) beneath the lava. In Libog, 100 people were declared dead—incinerated by steam and falling debris or hot rocks. Other villages like San Roque, Misericordia and Santo Niño became deathtraps. Ash was carried in black clouds as far as 160 km (100 mi) from the catastrophic event. More than 400 persons were killed.

Searching for an apartment in Abu Dhabi, UAE

At first the attractions seemed limitless.

The prospects of living in a new intriguing location, where the sun shines each day… Oh! and where your salary is tax free - seemed almost just too good to be true!

Well the location proved to be new and intriguing and by and large the sun does always shine each day and of course we all know about salaries. But no-one warns you of the menace that, it seems, is the blight on everyone’s horizon … the unexpected costs of actually finding somewhere to live!

As soon as it was confirmed that I would be moving to Abu Dhabi, I was typing into Google for somewhere to rent. Within seconds of the search results appearing on my screen I was greeted with forum after forum of recent expats rent experiences. And it didn’t look good. From stories of not being able to find anything for at least six months to over-the odds rental prices, plus havingto pay a whole year up font, my nerves were in tatters - how was I going to afford anywhere?

Still trying to be optimistic I made the move across seas, dragging my belongings behind me.

Six months later, I’ve had enough. I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s near impossible to be able to afford to live in Abu Dhabi and have decided I’d rather face a commute than pay greedy prices for inadequate properties.

A few months ago I had look around a couple of studios and one-bedroom apartments. Promised they were new and in a reputable area. I was eager to investigate. Instead I was greeted with near-mouse sized cockroaches and a kitchen that couldn’t cater a cat, let alone a human. All this unfurnished, for the hysterical price of AED 125,000 - paid yearly of course - and the landlord assured me this was a good deal. I suppose it was, compared to another ridiculous one bed priced at AED 160,000 a year. Unsurprisingly, I didn’t even bother viewing that one.

And I’m not the only one not wanting to live in squalid conditions and having to plead for a bank loan to be able to just about scrape by on costs. While rents drop in other nearby emirates, Abu Dhabi shows no signs og relenting on its astronomical prices and people are quickly leaving. What I find most baffling is that whilst hundreds of residents are packing up and choosing to live outside the capital, there’s no push to entice people back. Maybe someone’s hoping that the huge number of soon-to-be empty villas and flats will help the thousands still having to share rooms in the city to space out a little more.

Dubai vacation...

Yikes! I’ll be spending my holidays to Dubai this weekend ’cause I’m quite bored already here in Abu Dhabi. My life here sucks! Its quite boring, tiring and same old scenario which is home to work, work to home. Thanks to my friends who invites me to come and enjoy with them. I actually visited Dubai for several times already with my relatives here in Abu Dhabi. We been to The Dubai Mall where one of the best aquarium is located. Its really awesome and fantastic! Aside from that, we also been to Mercato Mall. Its one of the great structure of Mall I’ve been aside from what I’ve seen in Tokyo, Japan. Dubai has actually a lot of amazing scenery to offer you if you want to visit their place. But before you decide to visit this place you must have to be aware on their weather condition ’cause during May to September this place is pretty hot. But still awesome to visit of course! At least if you’ll decide to be here during those months you’ll definitely catch the hottest place on earth.

dubai-exit

Actually, when I first arrive Abu Dhabi last year I was really shock on their weather condition ’cause its really hot but as time passes by I was used on it. For your information you’ll already reached Dubai from Abu Dhabi for about 2 hours by Bus and maybe 1 and half hour by personal car. So, if you got a plan to spend your Holidays in Dubai drop me a message here I’ll meet you too.

Anyway, I’m already half excited on my Dubai exit this weekend. I’ll be seeing my friends there and probably they’ll tour me around to those places I have never been yet like The Pyramids. Wish me luck everyone!
