Safety Matters for your child...

• Is it suited to your child’s developmental level? Most toys bear a “recommended age” sticker, which should be taken as a starting point in the selection process. Be realistic about your child’s abilities and level of maturity when choosing an age-appropriate toy. Toys that have projectiles, for example, are never suitable for a child under age 4 — and even some 6-year-olds aren’t mature enough to handle them. Likewise, if your 3-year old still puts everything into his mouth, continue to steer clear of toys and games with small parts and pieces.

• Think big. Until your child turns 3, toy parts should be bigger than his mouth to avoid the possibility of choking. To determine whether a toy poses a choking risk, try fitting it through a toilet paper roll. If a toy or part of a toy can fit inside the cylinder, it’s not safe.

• Is the toy too heavy? Could your baby be harmed if it fell on him? If so, pass.

• Look for toys that are well put together. Make sure tails are securely sewn, seams of stuffed animals are reinforced, and paint is not peeling. Stuffed animals should also be free of buttons, yarn, ribbons, and anything else your child could yank off and put in his mouth.

• Is your child physically ready for this toy? For example, parents of older kids may buy a bike one size too big so as not to have to buy a new bike the next year. This tactic can lead to serious injury if a child doesn’t have the physical skills to control the bigger bike.

• Is the toy in good condition? Used toys passed down from older relatives or siblings or bought at yard sales can be worn or frayed, which can be sometimes pose a danger. Examine all new or used toys for buttons, batteries, ribbons, eyes, beads, and plastic appendages that could easily be chewed or snapped off.

• Does the toy have a string or cord longer than 12 inches? A cord can too easily be wrapped around a young child’s neck, causing strangulation. Once your child can climb up on his hands and knees, remove crib gyms and hanging mobiles from his crib. Be particularly vigilant about older toys. For example, an older model of a popular play kitchen may have a phone attached with a potentially deadly cord, while the latest model of the same kitchen has the more current and safer cordless phone.

• Does the toy use small magnets? In 2007, the CPSC named magnets the #1 hidden home hazard. Small, powerful magnets are often used in toys, and may fall out of the toy and be swallowed by a child. Two or more swallowed magnets (or a magnet and a metal object) can be attracted to each other through intestinal walls, causing twisting and pinching of the intestines, holes, blockages, infection, and worse if not discovered and treated promptly. As of August 2007, one death and 86 injuries from magnets had been reported to the CPSC, and 8 million magnetic toys had been recalled. The agency recommends keeping toys with magnets away from kids under 6 years old.

Britons Can't Do Without Their Red Phone Boxes

Many Britons are seeing red about British Telecom's decision to destroy the red telephone-box structures that dot the landscape all over the country.
The sentiment seems to be one of nostalgia more than practicality, since the U.K. boasts one of the highest rates of mobile phone ownership in the world. For many people, utility is not the point of the exercise. They just don't want to see the red boxes pulled down.

Even though the telephone boxes seems like they've been around forever, they have been parts of communities only since the late 1930s. Painted the same color as post boxes, the telephone boxes have provided many an opportunity for generations of people to make a quick phone call while on the go.

An exhaustive count of the countryside in 2002 revealed the existence of about 17,000 red telephone boxes all around Britain. That's a lot of real estate to maintain at 800 pounds (British money) a year, which is what it costs British Telecom to maintain each phone box. More than half no longer pay for themselves, and a recent study found that a full 10 percent of phone boxes were used no more than once a month.

In recent years, people have warmed to British Telecom's "Adopt a Kiosk" program, which allows local government organizations to buy their phone box for one pound, with the understanding that the phone inside will no longer work.

That suits many people just fine, since it's the box – not the telephone inside – that evokes nostalgia. Many boxes have been transformed to suit other purposes, including gardens, bulletin boards, and even a library. One phone box in Somerset contains a mannequin created by the primary school nearby.

The big picture for nostalgic Britons and photo opportunity-seeking tourists is that the phone boxes will remain, even if they no longer serve their primary function. By: socialstudiesforkids.com

Do you know that it is a vital element in our life and it simply makes us more mature and brave enough to facing any realty in life? Well, I conclude that education is indeed important in our everybody lives. For that, I highly recommend to each and every one of you parents that to remain responsive to the needs of their children specifically, the education aspects of a child. They must be responsible in providing quality early childhood education for their children who are at a vulnerable, but highly curious age for learning. Their minds need enrichment during their younger years and that needs to come from their education. Remember, a good foundation of education for every child is indeed crucial to become a good and productive citizen as they grow. So, every parent should seek the opinions from those who are experienced regarding daycare centers. They must consider the contributing factors that might possibly expedite the learning process of a child and to utilize this. Moreover, it is therefore obvious that a child development center plays an essential role in the child's development but also in nation building. Every child's mind can thrive and be better, and have the chance to enrich those of others in the future. For those parents out there who wish to send their children to a high quality and very standardized school, consider Green Acres Learning Center. Major quake hits CA, Mexico cities

More than 350 aftershocks rattled the Mexico/California border Monday after a major Baja California earthquake killed at least two people and injured hundreds of others when it struck at 3:40 PM (PDT) Sunday.

The 7.2 magnitude earthquake was one of the strongest to hit the region in decades. It was centered 39 miles south-southeast of Calexico, CA, and shook about 20 million people.

"With the number of aftershocks we've had, the likelihood of another 6 or 7 magnitude earthquake is very real," Erik Pounders, a geologist at the U.S. Geological Survey, told Reuters Monday

The temblor cracked the main aqueduct that provides water from the Colorado River in the Mexicali Valley to Tijuana, limiting the amount of water available in that major city

Suzi Woodruff of the Salvation Army del Mar Division, said the Salvation Army in San Diego has sent two emergency mobile feeding units (canteens) to the El Centro and Calexico area. The canteens are handing out water, snacks and meals to first responders that are doing damage assessments and cleanup, as well as those affected by the earthquake.

Woodruff also said at least 11 families displaced by the quake are being housed at The Salvation Army El Centro Corps Community Center shelter, which is already housing 30 survivors.

There have not been any serious injuries reported in Calexico, the U.S. city that was hit hardest by the quake, but damages are severe.

Nearly 80 percent of historic downtown Calexico is badly damaged. Twelve blocks of the area has been closed off until further notice, this includes vehicular and foot traffic.

“Although the streets are closed off, there is so much policing and lighting in the area, that the fear of looting is non existent," said City Manager of Calexico, Victor Carrillo. "You aren’t getting into that area, unless you’re a store owner or government employee. Other than the media, it is like a ghost town.”

Carrillo said roofs are caved in, windows are smashed, and three large water tanks that hold the city’s water supply, are damaged. Residents have been asked to use water very sparingly and only when necessary.

The earthquake downed three power lines in Calexico, causing power outages for hours, and a gas leak resulted in a brief evacuation of about 30 homes.

About 20 buildings collapsed and store windows are shattered due to intense shaking. Images show residents camping outside, damaged roadways, and various stores in disarray with the merchandise on the floor.

“You have to remember that a lot of these buildings downtown were built in the early 1900’s, so they are not up to the astringent building codes we have today. They’ve been plastered over and changed identities many times… they’re very old. Luckily a lot of the structures are single or two stories, so damage was limited from shaking and things like that,” said Carrillo.

Most of the stores damaged in the downtown area were discount shops and other small retailers. Carrillo said that the only people allowed in the stores right now are the managers and one another person who can assist them. If a store has been red tagged, a structural engineer needs to accompany the store owner and tell then what they need to do to bring their stores into building codes and compliance.

Chuck Erickson, Vice President of the Southern California VOAD says that damage in the U.S. seems to be more commercial: “Not too many houses were damaged, it was mostly commercial buildings. Many stores have been affected.”

The quake could be devastating for the economy of Imperial County, which already has the highest unemployment rate in the state, said Hildy Carrillo, executive director of the Calexico Chamber of Commerce. "It will be months before downtown is back. It's a mess," she said.

The damage in the U.S seems to primarily affected California's southeastern Imperial Valley, however; shaking was felt as far away as Los Angeles, California, and Phoenix Arizona. Minor damage to buildings was reported in San Diego.

Erickson said in San Diego, he felt tremors from the aftershocks. “We had about 40 seconds of rolling shocks here yesterday and I haven’t felt much since that time, but there could be a few more coming.”

Closer to the quake, Carrillo’s experience was more intense: “I had my family and grandchildren there and everybody crowded in the hallway. There were a lot of things falling off shelves; wine bottles, pictures, two of my TV’s were broken. I’ve been living in Calexico since 1950, and this was the most I’ve ever experienced. A lot of the homes are young in that they’ve been built over the last 20-30 years, so in residential areas, damage was minimal and mostly limited to things falling inside of homes due to shaking… which is fortunate.”

Carrillo said that the town hopes to have damage assessments done by Wednesday. “We want store owners can be in there cleaning up Thursday and Friday, and by Sunday we hope to have reopened stores that aren’t red tagged and return to as much normalcy as possible.”

According to a spokesman for the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake was similar in size and power to the one that hit Haiti in January. It is the third major earthquake to hit Western Hemisphere during the past three months. By: SANDIE GARCIA

Record floods impact thousands

More than 11,000 residents of Rhode Island and Massachusetts have already applied for aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) following historic flooding that has hit the region.

While some survivors will spend the weekend digging through water-logged possessions, others are still unable to return home until nearby rivers crest early next week. Emergency officials in Rhode Island, hard-hit by flooding this week, were particularly concerned about the number of businesses impacted by the disaster. The state’s unemployment rate was already one of the highest in the nation.

According to the National Weather Service, Massachusetts, New Jersey and parts of New York City set March rainfall records. And by Tuesday afternoon, Rhode Island joined them, with more than 15 inches of rain recorded.

National Guard troops have been deployed in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Bridges and highways were washed out from Maine to Connecticut and sewage systems were overwhelmed to the point that families were asked to stop flushing toilets.

Rhode Island fared the worst in the northeast flooding, with nine inches of rain in East Providence, eight inches in downtown Providence and five inches in Cranston.

“None of us alive have seen the flooding that we are experiencing now or going to experience,” Rhode Island Gov. Don Carcieri said. “This is unprecedented in our state's history."

“The Rhode Island National Guard has just been unbelievable. They reacted the minute the rains started, because we all knew what was coming. They have been working around the clock. They’re helping towns with sandbags, they are people available for rescue missions, and they’ve provided equipment to everybody,” said Steve Kass, Communications Manager for the Emergency Management Agency of Rhode Island

Although many parts of the state appeared unaffected, roads in other areas were washed out, ball fields were underwater, and homes and businesses were flooded. “People all over the state have got flooding issues in the basements and in their homes because the ground continues to be so saturated,” Carcieri said. “Unfortunately, that is going to continue for a little longer.”

“There is hundreds of millions of dollars in damage. All the rivers, streams, highways, have been blocked off pretty much everywhere. The damage was extensive right across the board. We don’t even have a real handle of it yet. I mean, you take a flight over the state there’s so much water, its mind-boggling. Remarkably, there have been no fatalities or serious injuries reported,” said Kass.

The Department of Public Works in Rhode Island asked every resident, (about 1 million people) to conserve water and electricity because of flooded sewage systems and electrical substations. Health officials urged people exposed to floodwater to wear long sleeves and wash their hands regularly to avoid bacteria and viruses.

Carcieri, said it is too soon to know the economic impact of the latest round of flooding to the state, which has a $220 million budget deficit.

The heavy rain is just another setback to Rhode Island, which has struggled for months with an unemployment rate nearing 13 percent. This is 3 percent higher than the national average.

Some of the areas worst hit were business districts, including the area around the Warwick Mall, one of the state's major shopping areas. “The Warwick Mall is still underwater- that’s 1,000 jobs… we have one of the highest unemployment rates in the country as it is. We don’t need this at all,” Kass said.

The National Weather service said that the Pawtuxet River, which runs through Cranston, Rhode Island, crested at 20.79 feet Wednesday. This is nearly 12 feet above flood stage. Although it is now falling, it is not expected to be below flood stage until Sunday.

As floodwaters in various areas begin to recede, residents may have to spend their holiday weekend cleaning up damage and shoveling mud from their homes. Disaster response organizations said they expected to begin damage assessments next week that will help them consider appropriate response to the most recent flooding.

Allan Fung, Mayor of Cranston, Rhode Island, said 140 homes were evacuated in his town. “We’re at a stage now where we move from public safety aspect to the assessment of infrrastructure and helping people pump out their basement and get back in their homes. We’re getting two major sewer pump stations back up and running right now. There’s a lot going on.”

Kass said that at this point, there is only so much residents can do. “So many homes still have water in their basement (from the storm two weeks ago), now the water is several feet higher, and the water table is so high, that there’s nowhere for it to go, it can’t be absorbed. I was getting water in my basement yesterday. It’s unreal,” said Kass.

The Northeast has barely had time to recover from their last major storm. The most recent storm follows nearly 10 inches of rain residents received just a few weeks ago.

“The FEMA people are still here from the last storm. Now they’ve sent additional people for this storm. Two weeks ago, the Pawtuxet River went six feet over flood level, and that was crazy. This time it went 12 feet over flood level causing much more widespread damage. The whole state is buried,” said Kass.

President Obama issued an emergency declaration Tuesday for Rhode Island, ordering federal aid and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano visited Rhode Island on Friday to assess the damage.

The National Weather Service says that sunny weather over the next few days should speed up the drying process as Easter weekend approaches.

Kass has tried to find positive in a bleak situation: “Once we get all the water down to normal, we can see what’s underneath it all, then it’s a massive clean up. People have started what they can, but it’s still a waiting game until it goes away.” By: SANDIE GARCIA

Dream Home...

Its been a quite sometime now that I been living here in Abu Dhabi, UAE to earn a living. I can still remember the day I step in to this promising land and was hoping to pursue my goals, plans and aspirations. I never thought that I can reach this far. Thanks to my family who was always there for me and who support me all the way. To my Dad's Sis who happens to be so nice and open arms to accompany me during my first weeks here.

But you know guys if I only have a greater and better chance to work in Phil and if the compensation is much better than I expect to have I won't be here and would certainly settle down for good in Phil. But the was not going smoothly. So, I decided to work abroad for good. Though I left my family quite so far but I bring the hopes that one day I can support them as well as my future family.

There were so much thing I plan. Personally, I dream to proved a better house plan for my family. I mean, my native home where I grew up and had build-up my dreams. Time passes by as we grow older our lovely home is getting smaller as we are also getting bigger...LOL..

For that, house plans is one of my target this year. I am planning to rebuild our house as I am the only one who are able to do so as my older Sister and Brother are both had a life now with their own. They can help but in some few things only as their own family is their priority.

Well, probably before this year end as it start I might possibly ask my Dad to fixed all the things we to secure and have before we start re-building. Actually my Dad knows about it as I keep on saying it to him. Hopefully everything goes well...

For some of you who do have a home plans I highly recommend you this sitehouseplansandmore.com 'cause as far as I knew, they were one of the excellent provider for house plans. Just pay visit to their friendly Website and check all the services they had for you.

Nicest Things about plants....

1. Plants have in their structure xylem tubes that transport water and mineral salts and phloem tubes that carry the food. Both types of tubes are produced by a meristematic tissue called cambium. Xylem is produced inward, phloem outward. Death xylem layers form the wood.

2. The green pigment called chlorophyll allows the photosynthesis through which plants synthesize sugars coming from water and carbon dioxide. Even brown or red leaves contain chlorophyll. Only parasite plants, like dodders and fungi lack chlorophyll. Sugars stock sun energy. In greenhouses, artificial light and supplementary carbon dioxide boost photosynthesis. But plants also need nitrogen, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, calcium and potassium, plus minor amounts of other elements, for synthesizing all the necessary organic chemicals. Most plants store energy as starch.

3. Plants breathe all the time, breaking down the sugars for getting energy. Plants also sweat, mainly through their leaves. Water goes out through small pores called stoma. This creates an absorption force transmitted to the roots. In wet environments, plants sweat less, but in dry, windy areas, the water loss is high. Plants adapted to dry and hot weather lack leaves (cacti) or have special changes in their leaves that impede water loss, like thick cuticles and less stoma whose opening can be controlled.

4. Plants growing in the shadow have larger leaves; plants can also direct their leaves towards the light source, a phenomenon called phototropism. Because plants lack a nervous system, plants’ reactions are controlled by hormones. Gibberellins are involved in stimulating plants’ growth, while abscisic acid inhibits the plant growth, causing the leaves and mature fruits to fall.

Geotropism is the plant’s reaction to gravitation: their roots always grow downward. Chemotropism is the plant’s reaction to chemicals, like auxins, hormones that control plants’ development and the growth rate of various parts. Auxins are concentrated in roots and shoots. Too much auxin inhibits the growth. If a plant is placed horizontally, auxins accumulate in the lower part, causing the curbed vertical growth of the plant.

Auxins are more concentrated in the shadowed part of the plant; this way they stimulate those cells to grow more rapidly, turning the shoot towards the light. This is a method through which a hormone creates movement. Auxins are involved also in the opening of the flowers, being influenced by light and temperature. Heat makes the petals grow faster causing the opening of the blossoms while the cold can revert this process.

In vines, the growth hormones concentrate into the opposite side to the support, fact that causes the curly growth around the support. As auxins control the shoots’ development, they generate the bushy (or not) aspect of a plant. When shoots are cut or destroyed, the auxins levels decrease, turning on “sleeping” buds that produce new shoots.

5. Plants growing in the tropical areas experience relatively short daylight all round the year, while those from higher latitudes experience very long daylight during the vegetation time in the summer. That’s why tropical plants cultivated in temperate areas, like Dahlia brought from Mexico, will flower during the shorter autumn days.

6. Today, there are about 400,000 species of plants. First plants going out of the water (mosses and ferns) are still connected to wet environments, due to physiological and reproductive reasons. First flowered plants (gymnosperms) depended on wind for pollination and seed dispersal. Angiosperms (fruit plants) evolved with the pollinating insects.

7. The oldest known “plants” are 3.1 billion years old blue-green “algae” (a type of photosynthetic bacteria). These plants still form scums on lawns or forest trails and are the first organisms to have made photosynthesis. Bacteria can divide in 20-30 minutes, and a sole cell can produce hundreds of millions of bacteria in 10 hours. Most bacteria have about 0.00001 mm in length.

8. About 1.5 billion years ago, the first real unicellular algae appeared. They still make most of the phytoplankton. Euglena, a unicellular alga, can also feed the way animals do. Today, unicellular algae grow from the oceans to lakes and wet places (like shadowed walls). 590 million years ago, there were over 900 species of large pluricellular algae (“sea weeds”). Likens are symbioses between an alga and a fungus. They are so resistant, that they can live at 5,600 (19,000 ft) in Himalaya and are the first pioneers of barren rocks or colonize tree trunks or bones. Some likens are used for achieving turnsole, a chemical indicator that turns red in acid solutions and blue in alkaline solutions.

Stop and Realize...

  • Don’t smoke - experts proves that smoking a cigarette after meal is comparable to smoking 10 cigarettes (chances of cancer is higher).
  • Don’t eat fruits immediately – immediately eating fruits after meals will cause stomach to be bloated with air. Therefore take fruit 1-2 hr after meal or 1hr before meal.
  • Don’t drink tea – because tea leaves contain a high content of acid. This substance will cause the Protein content in the food we consume to be hardened thus difficult to digest.
  • Don’t loosen your belt – Loosening the belt after a meal will easily cause the intestine to be twisted & blocked.
  • Don’t bathe – bathing will cause the increase of blood flow to the hands, legs & body thus the amount of blood around the stomach will therefore decrease. This will weaken the digestive system in our stomach.
  • Don’t walk about – people always say that after a meal walk a hundred steps and you will live till 99. In actual fact this is not true. Walking will cause the digestive system to be unable to absorb the nutrition from the food we intake.
  • Don’t sleep immediately – food we intake will not be able to digest properly. Thus will lead to gastric & infection in our intestine.

Searching for an apartment in Abu Dhabi, UAE

At first the attractions seemed limitless.

The prospects of living in a new intriguing location, where the sun shines each day… Oh! and where your salary is tax free - seemed almost just too good to be true!

Well the location proved to be new and intriguing and by and large the sun does always shine each day and of course we all know about salaries. But no-one warns you of the menace that, it seems, is the blight on everyone’s horizon … the unexpected costs of actually finding somewhere to live!

As soon as it was confirmed that I would be moving to Abu Dhabi, I was typing into Google for somewhere to rent. Within seconds of the search results appearing on my screen I was greeted with forum after forum of recent expats rent experiences. And it didn’t look good. From stories of not being able to find anything for at least six months to over-the odds rental prices, plus havingto pay a whole year up font, my nerves were in tatters - how was I going to afford anywhere?

Still trying to be optimistic I made the move across seas, dragging my belongings behind me.

Six months later, I’ve had enough. I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s near impossible to be able to afford to live in Abu Dhabi and have decided I’d rather face a commute than pay greedy prices for inadequate properties.

A few months ago I had look around a couple of studios and one-bedroom apartments. Promised they were new and in a reputable area. I was eager to investigate. Instead I was greeted with near-mouse sized cockroaches and a kitchen that couldn’t cater a cat, let alone a human. All this unfurnished, for the hysterical price of AED 125,000 - paid yearly of course - and the landlord assured me this was a good deal. I suppose it was, compared to another ridiculous one bed priced at AED 160,000 a year. Unsurprisingly, I didn’t even bother viewing that one.

And I’m not the only one not wanting to live in squalid conditions and having to plead for a bank loan to be able to just about scrape by on costs. While rents drop in other nearby emirates, Abu Dhabi shows no signs og relenting on its astronomical prices and people are quickly leaving. What I find most baffling is that whilst hundreds of residents are packing up and choosing to live outside the capital, there’s no push to entice people back. Maybe someone’s hoping that the huge number of soon-to-be empty villas and flats will help the thousands still having to share rooms in the city to space out a little more.

My Birthday is fast approaching!

Yikes! I'm not getting any younger! A week from now I'll be turning mid 20's. This will be first time in my life that I'll be celebrating it away from home land Philippines. Though I'm turning a little year older than last year I still can't say that I have everything. Yes, I have my beloved family and friends but there's still several things in my life that I'm still finding the answer. I'm not yet satisfied as to where I am now though of course, I'm glad and thankful. Its just that I can't say that I'm ready to settle down anytime from now. I just hope that what life brings me ahead I'll be ready to accept it.

I have several wishes and hopes and several plans to pursue. Those simple things was one of the reason why I keep on breathing on despite the hardships and obstacles 'cause I know after every hardships there's a victory awaits for me. So, wish me luck everyone as I face the another new year of my birth. Hope God will still bestow a lot of blessing for me, for my family and to all the people who deserves it. God Speed!
