Sharks Carrying Drug-Resistant "Bacterial Monsters"

Our leftover medicines are spawning drug-resistant "bacterial monsters" that thrive inside sharks, scientists say.

The finding suggests antibiotics such as penicillin may be leaching into the environment and spurring drug-resistant bacteria to evolve and multiply in the oceans.

"Bacteria have sex, basically. They can transfer genetic material," said study leader Mark Mitchell, professor of veterinary clinical medicine at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Mitchell and colleagues found antibiotic-resistant bacteria in seven species of shark—such as bull sharks, lemon sharks, and nurse sharks—as well as the redfish Sciaenops ocellata. The fish live in coastal waters off Belize, Florida, Louisiana, and Massachusetts.

Though random mutations can account for the drug-resistant bacteria, there's ample evidence for human origin, he noted.

"What do people do with antibiotics when they don't finish them? They flush them down the toilet [or] put them in the garbage," Mitchell said.

Trashed Medicines Making Monsters

Bacteria exposed to the drugs develop resistance, Mitchell said, so "we have the risk of creating these bacterial monsters."

These monsters may cause particularly virulent illnesses in sharks and fish. But the researchers are also concerned the resistant bacteria will find their way back into the human food chain.

Though sharks aren't a staple in the human diet, we eat what they eat—crab, shrimp, and other fish. So people should be aware of these risks and handle food appropriately to avoid infection, Mitchell cautioned.

"I will eat things like sushi," he said. "But knowing there are those types of risks, I'm going to try and get it from healthy, wild-caught fish, where there might be more of a minimal exposure [to drugs]." By: John Roach for National Geographic News

Bunch of Fives: Must know streets...

Finding your way around Abu Dhabi's main island streets is a piece of cake, provided you know all the names of the main streets - and not just one time - they all have a name, a nickname and a number.

1. Airport Road, 2nd Street: Bisecting the city from Maqta Bridge all the way to the Corniche, this major artery links up to Sheikh Zayed road on the mainland over Maqta Bridge, or you can keep going straight to Al Ain.

2. Electra, Zayed the First and Second, 7th Street: Crossing the T-section of Airport Road, only veterans of the city would call this busy street Electra. Often the most direct route across the city, Electra begins at Le Meridien Hotel and cust straight through Khalidiya all the way to the InterContinental hotel.

3. Old Airport Road, Muroor Road, 4th Street: Back in the olden days, Muroor Road was the high street of Abu Dhabi. Home to the main post office, Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre and the Al Muhairy centre (the Chilis'building), Muroor serves as an alternative to Airport Road.

4. Khaleej Al Arabi, 3oth Street: The main byway linking residents of the Khalifa Cities and Mussafah to the city, 30th is one of the easiest routes from the mainland to the Corniche. The timed traffic lights help keep traffic under control and will take you from the public beach through Khalidiya and all the way out to the airport.

5. Eastern Ring Road, East Road, Salam Street, 8th Street: One of the most confusing streets in the capital, this construction weary street will soon be a major route for those living on Reem island. For now, it's the only way to get to Park Rotana and twofour54.

Trivia: Cheese to live longer?

Turn away from by many source of artery-clogging cholesterol, calcium-rich dairy products consumed in childhood may in some cases add years to one’s life.

According to the study, published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) 65-year follow-up to a 1930s survey of more than 1 300 families in England and Scotland showed that a diet high in milk, cheese and butter did not lead to higher rates of cardiovascular disease. Moreover, children with the largest intake of calcium from dairy enjoyed a lower death rate from strokes.

Heart disease risk factors begin in childhood, but evidence to date has been inconclusive as to whether dairy consumption at an early age helps or hurts. Some experts have argued that the high fat content in full-butter dairy products contributes to heart problems later in life.

No evidence was found of a link between intake of dairy products and either of these causes of mortality. Surprising, however, childhood intake of calcium – mainly from milk and milk-derived comestibles – corresponded to a lower rate of death by stroke. “Furthermore, childhood diets rich in dairy or calcium were associated with lower all-cause mortality in adulthood,” the study concluded. The authors cautioned that further studies were needed to confirm the findings, which may result in part from other factors such as income levels and occupation.

Travel Destination: Tagaytay City, Philippines...

Legend has it that the word “Tagaytay” came from “TAGA” meaning “to cut” and “ITAY” which means “Father”. A father and son were said to be on a wild boar hunt when the animal they were chasing turned and attacked them. As the boar charged towards the old man, the son cried “TAGA- ITAY”. The boy’s repeated shouts reverberated in the valleys of the ridge. Heard by the residents, hunters and wood gatherers, the cries became the subject of conversation for several days among the people in the countryside. In time, the place where the shouts came from became known as TAGAYTAY.

During the Philippine Revolution of 1896, the ridges and forests of Tagaytay became the sanctuary for revolutionaries including of those from nearby provinces. The passage to and from towns via Tagaytay added the word “Mananagaytay” to the native’s vocabulary. It means “to traverse ridges”.

At the outbreak of the Second World War, the 11th Airborne Division of Lieutenant General William Krueger’s 8th Army airdropped military supplies and personnel on the Tagaytay Ridge prior to the Liberation of Manila from the Japanese. A marker was installed in 1951 at the junction of the Manila-Canlubang-Nasugbu roads by the city officials in coordination with the Philippine Historical Institute.

Tagaytay became a chartered City on June 21, 1938 when President Manuel L. Quezon signed Commonwealth Act No. 338, a bill authored by Representative Justiniano S. Montano of Cavite.

AREA AND TOPOGRAPHY

The city has a total land area of 65.00 square kilometers or 6,500 hectares. Tagaytay City is characterized by mixed topography. The southern and eastern portions are covered by hills and mountains which are generally forests and open grasslands. There are ridge areas with slopes ranging from 10.1 to over 25 percent. On the other hand, the portions adjoining the municipalities of Mendez, Indang, Amadeo and Silang are level to nearby level areas interspersed with very gently sloping surface. The built-up areas including the urban center are situated in these relatively level portions of the city..

CLIMATE

Tagaytay City’s climate is characterized by relatively low temperature, low humidity and abundant rainfall. The city is endowed with a cool and invigorating climate with an average temperature of 22.7 degrees Celsius. The city is misty and is relatively cooler during the months of December, January and February. Like most areas in the Province of Cavite, the city has two pronounced seasons: dry from November to April and wet during the rest of the year.

The Roxas dilemma

Political analysts will be poring over the manner in which vice presidential frontrunner Manuel Roxas II knocked Loren Legarda out of the race, only to end up running neck and neck against Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay in what has turned out to be an unprecedented cliffhanger of a contest.

Less of a cliffhanger was the aftermath of the elections when, in the reporting of results, Binay emerged leading Roxas. The lead remains reflected in the official canvassing of votes by Congress. However, Roxas has not conceded the election, basically on two grounds.

The first is that as far as the official canvass is concerned, there remains about a million votes still to be officially counted, which exceed the current lead of Binay over Roxas. The second is the issue of “null-votes,” that is, what the machines recorded as either no votes cast (the ovals left blank), overvotes (two or more ovals shaded for the vice president slot), or improperly shaded ovals.

Obviously uncontroversial are ballots in which voters, like Joseph Estrada, declined to vote for any vice presidential candidate, or where voters voided the ballot they cast by overvoting. This still leaves the question of whether voter intent—voters making a mark for the vice presidency, but the PCOS machines not accepting those votes—justifies going back to the ballots and re-checking the improperly shaded ovals.

The real question, however, is this. In an unquestionably close election, to what extent, and where, should Roxas and his party-mates pursue their insistence on every vote being counted?

Procedurally, it seems clear that Congress, in joint session assembled as the National Board of Canvassers, is not the proper venue. Congress’ role is ministerial, virtually ritualistic: it is mandated to officially tabulate results submitted by the Comelec, inquiring only into the completeness and authenticity of the documents submitted by the electoral commission. The venue for questioning the official results is the Supreme Court.

But this presumes that everyone trusts the documents and the agency that produced them.

There is another danger and that is: in pursuing its objections, the Liberals might severely erode not only the credibility of the mandate of whoever would be proclaimed vice president (including Roxas), but also that of the winner of the presidential race. The LP has carefully pointed out that the null votes for the presidency amount to about 1.5 million, while 2.6 null votes are involved in the vice presidential race.

Clearly even if all the null votes in the presidential contest weren’t for the frontrunner, this couldn’t alter the results. So logically null votes and the presidential mandate are a non-issue. But in politics as in other human activities, logic doesn’t necessarily hold sway. The 2.6 million null votes in a tight vice presidential contest clearly require some sort of resolution; but how, and without tainting separate contests by association?

The LP pointed out that the results in a precinct in Datu Odin Sinsuat town in Maguindanao, and in Tabuan-Lasa in Basilan showed Binay getting 99 and 98 percent of all votes, respectively, suggesting a statistically improbable result from the party’s point of view. But these arguments are a double-edged sword.

One source from the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao pointed out that Binay got 100 percent of the votes in one clustered precinct (CP8 0014A). Total votes: 63. However, according to the same source, in another clustered precinct (CP17 0026A) in the same town of Bumbaran, Roxas’ running mate, Noynoy Aquino, also got 100 percent of the votes. Total votes: 32.

To give a concrete example of the nuances involved, consider the following information from our source. In one Moro barangay, Kadingilan in Midsayap, a town in North Cotabato, the Midsayap-wide poll results showed that Estrada got 62.97 percent of the votes. Yet in Clustered Precinct 46, Estrada received only 00.76 percent while Aquino garnered 68.06 percent.

In the end this is about trust: not only in Congress, but in electoral protests filed before the Supreme Court. Roxas faces the dilemma of legitimately fighting not only for himself but also for his voters, or of doing an Al Gore and throwing in the towel for the sake of peace and stability for his running mate, Aquino. Having already sacrificed his ambition for Aquino, he must consider whether he is required to do so again, in order to avoid an acrimonious start for the Aquino presidency. By: opinion.inquirer.net
